Carol’s List recruits, trains, supports progressive, pro-choice Democratic women to run for elected office in Montana and win — to increase women’s political power in the state.
We are an organization of firsts.
Our past chair, Carol Williams, was the Montana state Senate's first woman Minority Leader and Majority Leader. Founding members Christine Kaufmann and Diane Sands were the first openly lesbian state Senator and state Representative, respectively. Former board member Denise Juneau is the first Native American woman ever elected to a statewide office in the United States. Founding co-chair Carol Juneau carried the bill making Montana the first state to implement Indian Education for All.
Our current board is a mix of former legislators and current activists who work every day to identify and support talented women to run for office and win.
Our story
Carol’s List was formed 10 years ago by a group of current and former women legislators who saw the need for an organization solely dedicated to electing more Democratic women in Montana.
Back then, women often weren't asked to run for office, and when they did, they weren't supported. Fewer than one in four legislators were women. And those numbers weren't rising.
The founders of Carol’s List realized that women would never be fully represented without deliberate, strategic, long-term candidate recruitment and candidate support. Carol’s List is not only asking women to run. We're also providing resources and support to help women win.
Originally named the Montana Majority PAC, Carol’s List was built on the foundational work of the Montana Pipeline Project from 2005-2010. In honor of our founding co-chairs, Carol Williams and Carol Juneau, we renamed ourselves Carol’s List.
Modeled after EMILY’s List, we are a lean, effective organization with a small staff and an all-volunteer board. We spread the word far and wide about our endorsed candidates and ask our supporters across the state to contribute directly to campaigns. We target our resources in races where we can make a difference.
With your help, we can change Montana's political landscape for the better.
