Women *not* to vote for!
You’ve seen our endorsements, and you know that Carol’s List supports progressive, pro-choice women to run for office.
We’re also uniquely able to make another list for you: A list of women candidates we don’t support.
We certainly won’t be voting for any of the women candidates on this list, and we don’t recommend that you do either. Please feel free to share this anti-endorsement list with all of your friends who care about a woman’s right to choose, equality for all, fully funded public schools, voting rights, science, and access to public lands.
Anti-endorsement #1 : Jennifer Fielder
Running for: Public Service Commission District 4
Term-limited Republican state senator Jennifer Fielder is connected to right-wing militias, spreads extremism online, and is the CEO of a Utah-based group that wants to sell off Montana’s public lands.
Jennifer Fielder:
Vocally and publicly supported the right-wing extremist Bundy family during their armed standoff with government officials at their Nevada ranch in 2014, and during their illegal takeover of an Oregon wildlife refuge in 2016. She also hosted an event in Montana for the Bundys in 2018.
Spread false and dangerous rumors to her followers online that “antifa” was coming to Missoula — a Facebook rumor (debunked numerous times by local law enforcement) that prompted armed, right-wing militia types to appear at a peaceful protest there in June.
Has for years served as CEO of the American Lands Council, a Utah-based group that advocates transferring public lands to the states, and she continues to agitate for bad bills that Montanans overwhelmingly oppose.
Anti-endorsement #2 : Elsie Arntzen
Running for: Superintendent of Public Education
Montana public school students are missing out on $800,000 in federal aid after Republican Elsie Arntzen oversaw giving a cut of federal Covid-19 education relief money to private and religious schools, a decision that was overruled by a judge in September.
Elsie Arntzen also:
Spoke in favor of “school choice” at a Montana Family Foundation rally last year.
Has such a terrible record that Montana’s biggest public-employees union condemned her candidacy in September.
Anti-endorsement #3 : Lola Sheldon-Galloway
Running for: Great Falls House District 22
This Republican candidate told the Great Falls Tribune this week that — in a global pandemic that’s killed more than 210,000 Americans — her #1 priority in the House will be “stopping socialism”. And her existing record is no less extreme.
Lola Sheldon-Galloway:
Introduced a bill last session to make abortion a felony after 20 weeks
Voted to take health care from 1 in 10 Montanans (see her vote on HB 658 - expanding Medicaid)
Anti-endorsement #4 : Kathy Whitman
Running for: Missoula House District 96
Montana is currently one of the hottest hot spots in the United States when it comes to Covid-19 cases, but this Republican candidate told her local paper that the #1 issue in her district is “excessive taxes”. She indicated that she wouldn’t do anything to help the largest employer in MIssoula — the University of Montana, which faces declining enrollment and a global pandemic. And she hinted that she doubted the coronavirus pandemic would still be an issue during the Legislative session.
Anti-endorsement #5 : Jane Gillette
Running for: Bozeman-area House District 64
This Republican candidate’s billboard and literature make her look like a pro-health care moderate. But her endorsement questionnaire from the religious right-wing Montana Family Foundation shows her true colors. According to her answers, Jane Gillette believes that:
Abortion should be prohibited in ALL circumstances
Public schools are overfunded
Non-discrimination laws shouldn’t be expanded to cover sexual orientation and gender identity
Anti-endorsement #6 : Christi Jacobsen
Running for: Secretary of State
This office oversees Montana’s elections. Republican candidate Christi Jacobsen wants to make it harder for you to vote, and she cites the usual Republican falsehoods as the rationale behind her extreme and unfair positions.
It’s clear from the recent debate in this race that Christi Jacobsen:
Supports discriminatory voter ID laws
Is a vocal supporter of the current president, and has followed his lead on spreading dangerous false messages about mail-in ballots
Doesn’t support online voter registration
Is endorsed by anti-choice Republican men like Greg Gianforte and Sen. Steve Daines
Anti-endorsement #7 : Laurie McKinnon
Running for: Montana Supreme Court
This is a critical non-partisan election for a seat on Montana’s highest court.
Justice Laurie McKinnon:
Would not guarantee at a September debate that the right to privacy (ie, a woman’s right to choose) is settled Montana law. (Her opponent Mike Black has said he would follow established law, and told Montana Public Radio: “Established law includes a woman’s right to choose.” While we’re not endorsing in this race, that sounds good to us!)
Was elected to the court in 2012 with the aid of a dark-money group that illegally raised and spent more than $120,000.
Her donors include anti-choice Montana Rep. Greg Gianforte, as well as former US District Court Judge Richard Cebull, who retired after he was found to have sent hundreds of racist, misogynistic emails from his official court email account.
